5 weeks old today! Congratulations munchkin! :) My time has come: I get to bid a fond adieu to my cozy 8-hour nights... I'm going in at 3 am for 1-2 hours of kangarooing/breast feeding from now on. I'm looking forward to it, though, just me and my girl snuggling together! :) Ava is doing great today, the doctor said she will have an occupational therapist (huh?) come in a week, to evaluate her sucking ability and see if they can't start to reduce her naso-gastric feeds, and slowly move to exclusively breast feeding. We are still a ways away from that, though, but I thought you might be as excited about this as I am :)

Okay... for those of us who don't know what Kangarooing is... :)??
(oh... I'm from Diaperpin.com, in case you didn't recognise my name!)
Hi sweetie, basically it originated in Columbia (South America) in the early 1980's. The NICU's in Bogota were having a crisis - fully 70% of their babies were not making it. So they began the "revolutionary" live experiment of asking mothers to use their bodies as "isolettes" for their babies - keeping baby skin-to-skin on their chests, even while sleeping. The NICU mortality rates dropped to 30%! And now the best hospitals in the world are adopting (and slightly altering) the technique. Not only is the mother's body great as an "incubator" for baby, but baby takes cues from mama's heart and lungs on how often and how steady to breathe and beat (their little hearts); this stabilizes them greatly and helps prevents many of the bradycardias (slow heart beats) and apneas (no breaths) that preemies experience. There are other benefits which including bonding and attachment benefits, and speed of recovery changes, amongst others.
Thanks for asking! See you at the Pin :)
